There has been one confirmed burglary in our neighborhood in the past week. Police indicate they have received other calls from residents regarding prowlers or break-ins in recent weeks as well.
The method of entry in the confirmed incident was access through a partially open garage door. Once inside, the intruder waited until the homeowner closed the garage door and retired for the evening. The intruder then entered the residence through the inside garage door and, while the homeowner was at home, rummaged through the lower level rooms, and was apparently scared off by the homeowner, who heard noise downstairs and called 911. Exit appeared to be via the rear door to the deck area. This incident occurred on a Friday evening roughly around 11:30 p.m.
Police believe that this was a crime of opportunity. Also, due to the lack of valuable items missing, the intruder appears to be an amateur, possibly a juvenile living in this neighborhood or one of the adjoining subdivisions. (At this point, this is speculation)
We have had known issues in the past with foot traffic coming from the Crabapple Cove subdivision that borders Oakwind to the south.
Police recommend the following steps be taken to avoid becoming a victim:

These are just a few suggestions to reduce your chances of being targeted. It is also important to be observant! If you see anything suspicious, be prudent and call 911.
A note to those with monitored security systems: The police treat all calls regarding a potential break-in as high priority. That being said, they also respond to many false alarms from automated security systems. A 911 call made directly by a homeowner will let police know that your alarm is for real.
